With profound sadness, I announce the passing of our esteemed colleague Professor Andrzej Maciejczak on March 15, 2025, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Professor Maciejczak was an exceptional figure in the field of neurosurgery and spinal surgery, serving as our esteemed EANS lecturer in spine biomechanics. His profound knowledge, surgical expertise, and dedication to advancing our understanding of spinal mechanics have left an indelible mark on our specialty.
I hold dear many fond memories of Professor Maciejczak from my time as a Training Committee participant at the EANS Spine Course more than twenty years ago, where his lectures captivated audiences with their clarity and depth. Later, as EANS Training Committee Chair, I had the privilege of inviting him as faculty, witnessing firsthand how he inspired new generations of neurosurgeons and demonstrated his unwavering commitment to education and mentorship.
Professor Maciejczak transformed the Neurosurgery Department at St. Luke’s Provincial Hospital in Tarnów into one of Europe’s most renowned centers. His prolific research in prestigious journals and his teaching through EANS and AO Spine courses benefited countless neurosurgeons worldwide. His contributions earned him the Gloria Medicinae medal, Poland’s Golden Cross of Merit, and the Medal of the National Education Commission.
The international neurosurgical community has lost a brilliant mind, skilled surgeon, dedicated teacher, and compassionate human being. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of spine specialists.
On behalf of the EANS, I extend our deepest condolences to Professor Maciejczak’s family and all who knew this remarkable individual.
Best regards,
Torstein R. Meling
